Sorting Through Your Waste
1. Get organized
Sort through all the items that you want removed. Make separate piles for items that can be recycled or donated and another pile for all the stuff that’s just plain garbage. Sort recyclables into the following categories: metal, glass, paper, plastic, textiles, wood, plant debris, ceramics and hazardous chemicals so that the waste collector can give you an accurate price estimate and remove your items quickly and efficiently.
2. Return bottles and cans
Head to your local bottle depot to recycle soda cans, juice containers, milk jugs, beer cans, beer bottles and even wine bottles. You pay a deposit on many of these items when you purchase them and the bottle depot will return that money to you when you bring in the empties for recycling. Not only will the planet thank you, your wallet will too! Don’t forget to remove the lids and give everything a quick rinse before bringing it in.
3. Give it to charity
Whether you are renovating or clearing out your basement, you may be able to salvage items that would otherwise end up in the landfill by donating them to charity. You’ll be doing your bit for the environment and helping the less fortunate all at once!
4. Place waste in an accessible area
Once you’ve thoroughly sorted through all of your stuff, place everything you want picked up in an area that is easy to get to and free from obstructions. This will make life easier for your waste collectors and help them to finish a little faster.
5. Respect local waste removal and collection regulations
Depending on the area you live in, some items—especially those that are considered hazardous—need to be sent to a special disposal facility. This is usually the case with things like electronics, paint and batteries.
